During one of my many peruses through Wikipedia I began to look at some of the viper species of snakes native to Africa. One specifically caught my eye because of the description of males and their behavior during the mating season:

During peak sexual activity, males engage in combat. This starts with one male rubbing its chin along the back of the other. The second male will then raise its head as high as possible. As they both do the same, the necks intertwine. When the heads are level, they turn towards each other and push. Their bodies intertwine as they switch positions. They become oblivious to everything else, continuing even after they fall off a surface or into water.

Sometimes they intertwine and squeeze so tightly that their scales stand out from the pressure. They have also been observed to strike at each other with mouths closed. Occasionally, the combatants will tire and break off the fight by “mutual consent”, resting for a while before resuming once more. The event is settled when one of the two succeeds in pushing the other’s head to the ground and raising its own by 20–30 cm.

I’m not sure why, but I find this behavior really cute and amusing. Especially the way they will both stop to rest for a while before going back to fighting one another. C: They’re such tough little punks who just want to be macho and find a lovely lady.

I decided to draw a little comic with these guys in it just for fun. O: I’ve never really drawn snakes before.

I honestly cannot remember if I ever posted this picture but…

Back in August when Chris’s mother came to visit, we all went to the Liberty Science Center in NJ. They have a bunch of cool animals there, not to mention the exhibits. I got to see my very first Gaboon Viper while we were there, and it was pretty amazing. It was such a fatty chub chubs!

Their fangs are LOOOONG, and they can deliver a LOT of venom when they bite; out of all venomous snakes, they have the largest fangs and the highest venom yield. However, they’re actually pretty freaking docile and rarely bite. Still, don’t dick around with them…their fangs are nearly as long as a fuckin’ pinky finger and ready to deliver a shit ton of hemotoxic venom.
